Counselling and Psychotherapy

Let me introduce
myself ...

Picture of Karen

Welcome, and thank you for checking out my website! The decision to seek support is a difficult one, and I commend you for taking this first step.

As a clinician with over 30 years of experience providing counselling and psychotherapy to people from all walks of life, I am a strong believer in hope and healing. I have been part of the journey to wellness undertaken by many people, and have witnessed tremendous change and growth in this process.

I specialize in working with people with addictions/substance use, trauma, and mental health issues including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. I also work with people who are seeking support around anger management, emotional intelligence, grief and loss, and parenting. I offer individual, group, and couples’ counselling.

In addition to providing services directly to clients, I have spent several years as a clinical supervisor to clinicians working with addictions, mental health issues, and trauma. I have taught advanced courses in the MSW at Carleton University, and am a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Therapeutic
Approaches

I use a variety of therapeutic techniques, as I believe that no single approach is suitable for everyone. Through initial assessment and collaborative discussion, together we will determine the methods that suit your needs. Some of the interventions and approaches I use include:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Narrative therapy
  • Solution-focused therapy
  • Transactional analysis
  • Attachment-focused therapy
  • Emotion-focused therapy
  • E.M.D.R.
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Emotional Intelligence and Integrity

Regardless of the methods used, the foundational basis of my practice is empathy, respect, and unconditional positive regard for everyone with whom I work. I take the entire person into account, using a framework that includes the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of the individual. I believe that treatment does not occur in a vacuum and that, in order to have lasting effects, the context of the person’s life also needs to be acknowledged and addressed.

Services
and Fees

As a registered Social Worker under the supervision of a Clinical Psychologist, my services are often covered under extended health care insurance plans. Here is some general information that you may need to know:

  • Reimbursement from extended health plans may require a written referral from your physician.
  • Fees are paid at the time of service, and a receipt is issued at the time of payment for reimbursement by your insurer.
  • Obtaining reimbursement from third party insurance companies is the responsibility of the client.
  • Fees can be paid by personal cheque, cash, or e-transfer. A fee of $10.00 will be charged for a cheque returned for any reason.
  • Psychological services are exempt from HST and may qualify as a medical expense for income tax purposes.
  • Please note that appointments missed without providing at least 24 hour’s notice will be billed at the full rate.
